Novak Djokovic, wife test negative for COVID-19 10 days after contracting the virus in Europe

Tennis star Novak Djokovic and his wife, Jelena, have tested negative for the coronavirus, according to an announcement from the top tennis player on this planet’s media team. This comes 10 days after Djokovic tested positive for COVID-19 while playing in an exhibition tennis series that he organized in Croatia and Serbia.

“Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena are negative for COVID-19. That used to be shown by the result of the PCR tests that both had in Belgrade,” his media team said, according to the AP.

Since testing positive for the coronavirus, Djokovic and his wife had been in self-isolation in Croatia and did not show any symptoms. Borna Coric, Grigor Dimitrov and Viktor Troicki — all of whom played in the exhibitions alongside Djokovic– also recently tested positive for COVID-19. Djokovic’s coach, Goran Ivanisevic, also has the coronavirus.

No social distancing measures were enforced all through the Adria Tour matches that Djokovic organized in Croatia and Serbia, although players travelled from all over the place the world to take part in the events. Off the court, videos surfaced in June of Djokovic and several European tennis stars, including Coric and Dimitrov, partying at a Serbian nightclub days before Dimitrov confirmed that he tested positive for the coronavirus.

“We organized the tournament these days when the virus has weakened, believing that the conditions for hosting the Tour had been met,” Djokovic said at the time. “Unfortunately, this virus is still present, and this is a new reality that we are still learning to manage and live with. I hope things will ease with time so we will be able to all renew lives the way they were.”

Before testing positive for COVID-19, Djokovic had spoke out against the “extreme” coronavirus guidelines the USA Open is putting in place ahead of the New York tournament in August.

“We should not have access to Manhattan, we must sleep in hotels at the airport, to be tested twice or three times per week,” Djokovic said in early June. “Also, we could bring one person to the club, which is in point of fact not possible. I intent, you want your coach, then a fitness trainer, then a physiotherapist.”

In the wake of the positive tests, organizers were forced to cancel the rest of the charity Adria Tour. Djokovic used to be slated to face Dimitrov in the finals.
